Hector Arturo Gómez, age 69, passed away peacefully at his home in Sebring, Florida on Monday, January 24, 2022. He was born in Washington, DC on February 22, 1952 to the late Manuel and Emma (del Pilar Avila) Gómez, and resided in Maryland most of his life. He leaves behind his loving wife, Lana D. Harrison, and children Katherine Gómez (Wilmington, Delaware), Alanna Gómez and fiancé Adam Clark (Sterling, Virginia), and Jaime Gómez (Santa Fe, New Mexico). He is also survived by two grandchildren, Emma and Evan Ferrante, brother Juan and wife Pauline Gómez, sister Irma (Mimi) and husband Richard Perkins, and brother Jaime Arreguin Avila. Lastly, Hector is survived by four half brothers, many wonderful nephews and nieces, other extended family, and numerous lifelong friends.
Hector was involved in sales early in his career, but quickly gravitated towards the non-profit sector. He was a natural leader, who was passionate about his career serving the Latino community, and the disabled community in Delaware. Hector was a very distinguished guitarist, one of his many talents, and loved co-founding a successful band in his 50s (the Conowingnuts). Additionally, he was very proud of his 10 years spent as a radio talk show host (WDEL and WVUD) showcasing multi-culturalism in the Delaware community.
Hector was never happier than when he was with family, especially his children and grandchildren. Of course, he also loved his friends, especially his Susquehanna “river family.” Hector loved the water and boating. He was an NCAA ranked athlete in tennis, but became an avid golfer in later years. Hector embraced life and people were drawn to his humor, his calm and loving spirit, innate kindness, and yes--his irreverence. He will be greatly missed.
