Wayne M. Buckingham Sr. (Papa), 74, passed away peacefully at home in August in Sebring, Florida.
Born to Mina and James Buckingham Sr., Wayne was a strong, dependable, and hard-working man that could fix or build just about anything. He spent 25+ years working at Northwestern Steel & Wire and later retired from Allied Locke before moving to Florida.
Wayne had a passion for restoring old cars, fishing, and motorcycles. A lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, he also loved being outdoors and completing hands-on projects. He was a proud member of the Eagles Club #2783 for 50+ years.
Known for his quiet strength, work ethic, and generous spirit, Wayne was always ready to lend a hand, offer support, and showed up when needed.
He had a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes. Wayne enjoyed making people laugh and had a knack for lightening the mood with his playful humor.
Wayne is survived by his daughter, Vanessa Buckingham; his granddaughters, Jadre (Hayden) Jones and Aryss Jones who were his pride & joy; his son, Wayne Buckingham Jr. and stepson Galen (Nikki) Rice. He also leaves behind his longtime partner, Sandi Hudson, and their beloved dog, Quinn. Wayne was proud to be part of Sandi’s extended family and shared a close bond with her sons, Chad (Laura) Hudson and JL (Sara) Hudson. He enjoyed watching Chad’s children — Dalton, Payton (Tegan and Connor), and Jaxon, as well as JL’s son, Ty, grow over the years.
He is also survived by his brother, Jimmy Buckingham, and his sister, Joann (Gary) Zigler. He was preceded in death by his brother, Don Buckingham and sister in-law Karen Buckingham.
He remained close with his childhood friend Doug Stern and held dear the memory of his longtime friend Jesse Neal, who preceded him in death. While living in Florida, Wayne found a trusted and like-minded friend in his neighbor, Rick Jacobs. The two of them shared a similar work ethic, worked well together, and built a strong friendship based on mutual respect.
Words can’t express how much he will be missed by his family.
A celebration of life will be held in Illinois at a later date.
